All In The Family

Up until very recently in the chain of human evolution, children were more than likely; destined, may not be the right word, but certainly predisposed to choose a career path not unlike their parents. If mom or dad was a doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief, the chance was almost 1 in 2 that you also would be a doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief. History is full of examples of progeny following their first role models into "the family business". So I guess it is no surprise to survey the landscape of popular music over the past 60 or so years and see the similar trend.

In many cases, the younger generation has a difficult time eclipsing their more famous fathers but that is not to slight the younger generation. They are talented musicians in their own right and more than likely would have made a name for themselves without all the advantages and benefits of being the son or daughter of whoever. Who am I kidding; Joe Smith might have a difficult time getting the attention of a record company executive but I'll bet Julian Lennon or Dweezil Zappa had little trouble setting the meeting. Let's be real at the same time, though. Yes they may have been able to set the meeting but the entertainment business is fickle and can be harsh. The children of famous fathers have a high bar to hurdle when it comes to delivering a product.
